Important Information About Your Wood Floors

Maintenance

General cleaning of your floors should be done as needed, on a regular basis. Kitchen and heavy traffic areas should be cleaned more often. Sweep or vacuum floors with a soft bristle head to remove dirt and grit before cleaning your wood floors. We recommend using either a solution of vinegar and water (1/2 cup vinegar to 1 gallon of water) or commercially available cleaners such as Glitsa Clean.

DO NOT USE PLEDGE, ENDUST, MURPHY’S OIL SOAP or SIMILAR PRODUCST to CLEAN YOUR HARDWOOD FLOORS.

These products leave a residue on the floor, which cannot be removed and will prohibit your floors from being screened and recoated in the future. The only way to remove this residue is to completely re-sand your floors. When dusting your furniture with these products, it is important to be careful of overspray which can get on your floors.

Humidity and Temperature

Wood flooring will perform best when the interior environment is controlled to stay within a relative humidity range of 35-55% and a temperature range of 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Fortunately, that’s about the same comfort range most humans enjoy. Although some movement can be expected even in this range, wood can expand and shrink dramatically outside that range.

Tips:

  • Do not wet mop or place rugs on newly finished floors for three to four weeks to allow the floors to fully cure. Wet moping can cause unwanted clouding or white marks on your new floors.
  • Sand, dirt and grit have abrasive particles. Walking on these particles will cause your finish to wear faster and make your floors look dull.
  • Nails of larger pets can cause scratch marks and dents that floor cleaners CANNOT remove.
  • Urine of any kind is an acid and can cause permanent stains. Clean up Immediately!
  • Felt pads should be used under all furniture that will or could be moved. Unprotected chair legs can prematurely wear off the finish or scratch your hardwood floors.
  • Planters can cause water damage and stains. Always make sure planters are kept in waterproof saucers.
